Yep, that’s right – like any muscle in your body, you can train your voice to become better and stronger. Despite what we’ve been told, you don’t have to live with your current singing voice for the rest of your life. In fact, training your vocal chords can radically transform the tone, pitch, and the sound of your voice over a period of time.

Sounds good, right?

So, how do you do this?

Well, I’m going to show you how.

By the end of this short post, you will know what you need to do to improve your singing voice.

What you need to know

OK, let’s start with the basics.

If you’ve been singing for a while, you might have a general idea of what you think you sound like. But do you know about the different aspects of your voice?

And what you need to improve?

Take your breathing for example.

Did you know that there’s not one, but seven different ways to breathe? And if you’re doing it wrong, it could be impacting your singing voice.

Then there’s pitch, which can have an effect on whether you’re in tune or note.

Tone and character are defined by your individual vocal sound, whilst any strain or tension in your voice will come from the vocal muscles (such as the larynx, diaphragm, and vocal chords).

Finally, your range and power will determine whether you can hit the high notes and project your voice effectively.

Control your breathing


Many people fail to realize that your breathing can have an overwhelming effect on how well you sing. You will want to breathe enough so that you don’t run out of breath when belting a particular note, and you want your breathing to be relaxed and intuitive so that you sound natural.

There are seven different types of breathing, all of which will help you to relax and control your voice. The sleeper breath is what you do when you fall asleep, and is often characterized as being slow, deep, and heavy. Your silent breath is when you breath when listening to a conversation – it’s slow and ‘silent’.

Then there’s your yawning and sighing breath, which you do when yawning or (yep, you guessed it!) sighing!

The gasp breath is slighting shorter, while the pant is faster and in succession.

Finally, the hiss is a type of controlled breathing that you do through your lips and teeth.

In order to improve your singing voice, it’s a good idea to pay attention to the type of breathing you do in certain situations, and take greater control over the way you inhale and exhale.

Listening to how your body reacts to certain stimuli can really help you when it comes to singing.

Change your sound

Did you know that your sound is produced by muscles in your body? Yes, that’s right.

What’s even more interesting is that you can train your vocal muscles just like you would with your biceps or quads if you were at the gym. You will want your voice to be clear, stay on key, and produce an easy tone.

To do this, you will need to make natural sounds from your mouth – without any strain or tension. Make a quick ‘hmmm’ sound (as if you had just heard something interesting) and listen to it carefully.

Firstly, use your natural pitch and don’t try to hit any particular pitch or note.

Improving your sound

Keep making the ‘hmmm’ sound to promote relaxation and then slowly make the sounds longer.

Next, make the sound imitating different musical scales. Go up and down, and keep on listening carefully. Pay attention to how your body makes this sound, as well as its pitch and tone.

Practicing this sound may sound silly, but it can help you to connect with your different voices, such as your head voice, middle voice, and chest voice. This is a simple exercise that you can do at home – and best of all, it won’t cost you a penny!

What does all of this mean?

Although this is just one type of exercise, it can help to train various aspects of your singing voice.

You will need to put the practice in and repeat exercises like this every day over a prolonged period of time in order to see a change in your singing voice.

Improving your voice over time is definitely possible, but you will need to put the work in.

Whether you choose online singing lessons or vocal coaching, you will gradually learn how to control your voice. Remember – set aside some time every day to do your vocal exercises and try not to skip them!

A good plan is to practice your breathing for up to 15 minutes everyday and change the exercise every week to focus on a specific musical scale.

Each week you will adjust your pitch, but the amount of time you dedicate to the exercise will remain the same.

Practice, practice, practice

There are a total of 24 main musical scales (in major and minor) in total, which means it will take you 24 weeks to complete your training.

After this you can focus on more specific parts of your voice, such as breathing control, endurance, tone, resonance, projection, harmony, and pitch. You will want to dedicate a further week to each of these areas.

In total, your vocal training should last a total of 32 weeks, which will include 20 to 45 minutes of daily basic practice (you will practice for longer as you progress through the weeks), 30 to 60 minutes of daily or weekly practice to learn something new, and 30 to 45 minutes a day to practice new techniques.
